Biography [edit]
Brouwer was born in Havana, and went to the United States to study music University of Hartford and later at the Juilliard School, where he studied composition with Stefan Wolpe and Vincent Persichetti. His early works show the influence of Cuban folk music, but during the sixties and seventies, Brouwer was interested in music of modernist composers such as Luigi Nono and Iannis Xenakis, using indeterminacy in works such as Sonograma I.
Other works from this period include the guitar pieces Canticum (1968), La Espiral Eternal (1971), Parabola (1973) and Tarantos (1974). More recently, Brouwer's works have embraced more traditional styles, to minimalism. The work for solo guitar El Decameron Negro (1981), the Sonata (1990, for Julian Bream) and Paisaje Campanas Cuban (1996) are an example of this trend.
Brouwer has several official posts in Cuba, including the direction of the music faculty of the Cinema Institute of Cuba His works consist largely of pieces for solo guitar by several guitar concertos and more forty film scores.
Curiosities [edit]
- The sixth part of his Etudes Simples (Estudios Sencillos) was quoted by the heavy metal guitarist Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne as he worked with) in the introduction to the song "Diary of a Madman."
- The No Estudio 5 Leo Brouwer, taken from the first series of Estudios Sencillos, was recorded by Leo Brouwer himself in a double album in 2004 entitled "Homo Ludens" (produced by Hummingbird). This version is enriched by the voice of Silvio Rodríguez who also wrote the text:
An angel on canción y fue a buscar a los ojos the pregunta en que se bañó la tarde y un arco iris soñado le dijo tenme y yo seré tu canción.
El ángel voló siete tonos de luz y una estela cantarina fue trazando en el viento
